Case Study
Earth 2 Earth
COP28 was a moment for the world to course-correct on climate change. As a sponsor of COP28, Mashreq had an opportunity to do more than show up. We challenged the brand to make its presence stand for something bigger - creating a space that embodied circularity, championed sustainability and brought people together around the conversation.

01 - The Brief
Make Mashreq’s presence at COP28 matter
In 2015, 196 countries signed the Paris Agreement, committing to limit global temperature increase to well below 2°C. But by the time COP28 arrived in the UAE, the world was off track.
As a COP28 sponsor, Mashreq had a role to play in a moment that demanded action - not just conversation.
The opportunity
Create a stand that could give Mashreq’s presence a meaningful role in the climate conversation.
02 - The tension we challenged
A sponsorship can give you a seat at the table
But what do you stand for once you’re there? COP28 would be filled with brands, organisations, leaders and conversations about sustainability.
This was the Define moment
A COP28 sponsorship presence.
A physical expression of Mashreq’s commitment to sustainability.
03 - The Strategic Reframe
What if the stand itself became part of the sustainability story?
We reframed the stand around one simple principle:
That meant making circularity not just a message on the walls, but a principle embedded into the space itself.
The result was Earth 2 Earth.
A stand designed to demonstrate that sustainability could be experienced - not simply talked about.

04 — The Idea
Earth 2 Earth
A stand that stood for circularity.
Built from 100% recycled dead palm fronds sourced within the UAE, the 25-square metre stand gave discarded natural material a new purpose. But the thinking went beyond the structure itself.
From construction to operation, every element was considered through the lens of sustainability.
Ultra-low energy appliances and energy-efficient LED lighting helped reduce energy consumption. Refreshments were served in glass water bottles. Real plants were used throughout the space, with every plant replanted after the event.
Even the journey to COP28 was considered, with electric transport vehicles used to move the stand.
And when the event was over, the stand didn’t simply become waste.
The entire structure was recycled and repurposed for different uses - giving life beyond the event - becoming the truest expression of the idea:
05 - What We Made
A physical platform for the sustainability conversation
Strategically positioned to maximise visibility from the VIP entrance, the stand invited delegates directly into Mashreq’s ESG conversation.
We also paid homage to the late great Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, winner of the Champion of the Earth accolade.
His portrait was recreated using desert palm waste - turning discarded material into a tribute to a leader whose legacy continues to inspire environmental action.
This was the Deliver moment
Turning a sustainability principle into a space people could see, experience and engage with.
And ensuring that what we created had a life beyond COP28.
06 - How it showed up in the world
A platform for the planet. A stage for bold voices.
The stand became more than an exhibition space. It became a platform for leaders, visionaries and environmental pioneers to bring their perspectives to the COP28 audience.
Through targeted outreach, influential speakers and thought leaders were invited not simply to speak, but to spark change.
The result?
Every session was filled.
Every keynote was packed.
The stand attracted some of the biggest leaders, thought leaders, environmentalists and sustainability advocates in the region - creating a space where the conversation could keep moving forward.

Start them young
Various schools came to our stand to listen and learn how sustainability-led finance can be instrumental in saving the world.
This was the Delight moment
Giving the sustainability conversation a place people wanted to be part of.
07 - Impact
Sustainability. Visibility. Talkability.
The stand didn't just host the conversation.
It became part of the conversation.

Earned Media
Sustainability-linked loans issued by Mashreq since COP28
The activation attracted coverage across regional media and generated praise from environmental advocates, including Friends of the Earth and Tree Huggers.
Because when a brand’s actions give its message substance, the story becomes bigger than the brand.
08 - Why This Matters
When you stand for something, people stand with you.
COP28 gave Mashreq a physical presence in one of the world's most important conversations. We turned that presence into something more meaningful:
Because sometimes, the most powerful thing a brand can do is make its presence stand for something bigger.
